The aims of the instrumental courses at the Mozarteum University Salzburg are for students to achieve artistic maturity and independence, the ability to reflect critically and evaluate their own abilities, to achieve artistic and scientific skills so as to be able to analyse musical works of art from all epochs, the ability to carry out a profession, the ability to fulfil artistic, educational and organisational tasks with a cultural dimension. In the master’s programme the students can enhance their individual abilities and interests through specialisations. The programme enhances the education in artistic subjects and moreover offers the possibility to develop special artistic and academic interests.

Definition of the field of studies

The study programme Wind Orchestra Conducting provides comprehensive training and perfection in musical and interpretative capabilities as well as the technical skills to conduct a wind orchestra in a professional way, all of which are required for a professional musical career.

Exams

The study programme "Wind Orchestra Conducting" includes nine compulsory subjects: the central artistic subject wind orchestra conducting; piano and score play; instrumentation and arrangement of music for wind instruments; practical course in percussion; comparative analysis of transcriptions, orchestra music and opera; job shadowing in orchestra conducting; theoretical basics of jazz and popular music; arrangement and composition in jazz and popular music as well as didactics of wind orchestra und ensemble conducting. Many elective subjects are also offered. Each student must successfully do a compulsory practical training consisting of three stage performances. A master’s thesis must also be written. The artistic part of the master’s examination consists of three parts: an internal exam (conducting a rehearsal of a wind orchestra as well as conducting of representative works from opera and orchestra literature), a colloquium and an external exam (public performance as conductor of a wind orchestra).

Entrance examinations

If the applicant has studied a bachelor's programme at the Mozarteum University Salzburg an entrance examination is not necessary. Applicants who studied at another university have to undergo an examination of their qualifications. In this examination applicants also have to prove their artistic potential to master the master’s programme. The exam consists of an analysis and conduction performance of a transcribed orchestra piece and of an original piece for wind orchestras. Moreover, the applicants have to create a transcription for wind orchestras.
