Definition of the field of studies

The instrumental studies programme “Recorder” provides comprehensive training and perfection in musical and interpretative capabilities as well as the technical skills to perform on the instrument recorder, all of which are required for a professional musical career.

Exams

The study programme "Recorder" includes four compulsory subjects (the central artistic subject, coaching, ensemble, and history of the literature of woodwind instruments) as well as various elective subjects. Each student has to successfully pass a practical training consisting of three stage performances. A master’s thesis must also be written. Students can choose between an academic and an artistic master’s thesis. The artistic part of the master’s examination consists of an exam repertoire consisting of a canzone or sonata by Fontana, two solo pieces, five pieces of music from different styles of the era between 1650 and 1800, a concert, two pieces of music of the era of modern music or contemporary music as well as two pieces of music from an era which can be chosen freely. Moreover, a programme must be designed for the exam. The student will be advised of the programme he/she has to perform a week before the exam takes place. The exams will take place in public like in a competition.

Entrance examinations

If a bachelor programme was studied at the Mozarteum University Salzburg an entrance examination is not necessary. Applicants who studied at another university have to undergo an examination of their qualifications. In this examination applicants also have to prove their artistic potential to master the master’s programme. A programme must be presented which must include works of a high degree of difficulty from various stylistic epochs.
