The aims of the instrumental courses at the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg are for students to achieve artistic maturity and independence, the ability to reflect critically and evaluate their own abilities, to achieve artistic and scientific skills so as to be able to analyse musical works of art from all epochs, the ability to carry out a profession, the ability to fulfil artistic, educational and organisational tasks with a cultural dimension.
The degree programme “Bassoon” is an instrumental studies programme. Besides the main instrument the piano will be studied as a secondary instrument. The programme focuses on classical music.
The five subject areas of the programme are: artistic practice, applied theory, music, literature and arts studies, music education and complementary courses. The bachelor programme starts with an introductory phase. At the end of the second semester an examination and a guidance talk will take place. In the central artistic subject at least one stage performance per semester should be done as of the second semester. The elective subjects are a module of their own. Two bachelor theses must be written. For the first one an introduction to a piece of music consisting of several movements from the artistic practice repertoire plus the historical and biographical background, structural analysis, performance practice and hermeneutic interpretation is recommended. The topic of the second one can be chosen from a special course. The bachelor examination consists of a 45-minute recital of works of solo and chamber music literature from various epochs.
The entrance examination consists of an instrumental audition, an examination of basic knowledge of general music theory and an exam in elementary piano playing well as an examination of the knowledge of German, if German is not the mother tongue. Three pieces of music from different style epochs must be chosen (Vivaldi, Mozart or Saint-Saens).
