The bachelor programme Tuba focuses on chamber music, choir, orchestra and Bläserphilharmonie as vital skills for professional practice. Students will achieve artistic maturity and independence, the ability to reflect critically and evaluate their own abilities. They will achieve artistic and scientific skills so as to be able to analyse musical works of art from all epochs. Graduates will be able to carry out a profession and to fulfil artistic, educational and organisational tasks with a cultural dimension. They will be qualified to work as soloists, freelance artists, chamber musicians, orchestra musicians, concertmasters, principals, tuttists in chamber, opera and symphonic orchestras and répétiteurs.

Definition of the field of studies

The instrumental studies programme “Tuba” provides comprehensive training and perfection in musical and interpretative capabilities as well as the technical skills to perform on the relevant instrument (tuba), all of which are required for a professional musical career. Through involvement with the artistic and intellectual aspects of music universal and practice-based competency will be achieved.

Exams

The bachelor programme is divided into three topics. Artistic practice includes the subjects central artistic subject with didactic transparency, piano, coaching, ensemble solo chamber music, ensemble in parts orchestra and Bläserphilharmonie, introduction to early music and introduction to new music. The discipline Applied Theory includes the subjects aural training, advanced aural training, solfeggio, theory, study of musical form, acoustics, and study of instruments. The module music, literature and arts studies consists of courses in history of music. Two bachelor theses must be written (the first one as an introduction to a repertoire peace consisting of several movements from one’s artistic practice, the second one from the fields of music theory, musicology, music education or alternatively an introduction to a work of music). The degree programme concludes with a bachelor exam in the form of a recital with works from solo and chamber music literature from various epochs.

Entrance examinations

The entrance examination consists of an instrumental audition, an exam in basic knowledge of general music theory and an exam in elementary piano playing. Students should also have knowledge of German.
