In the master's degree course in History of Art the students will learn about the history of fine arts, architecture and urban construction from late antiquity to the present. This includes painting, sculpture, graphic art, arts and crafts, photography, film, video and new media as well as museology. The theory and the notion of art and its history are also part of the discipline. Due to historical reasons the focus is on European art. More recently, however, transcultural and postcolonial issues have been increasingly examined and insights into the non-European art scene have been provided. The students will also consider the ideational, political and social as well as the institutional and personal circumstances leading to or accompanying the creation, dissemination and perception of works of art. Both classical art history methods and interdisciplinary approaches and gender theories will be applied in this context.
