The subject of art history deals with the visual arts of the past and present in all their forms. In principle, art history knows no temporal, geographical or qualitative boundaries. In practice, however, traditional areas of focus have emerged: teaching of the subject begins with the era of Constantine the Great and the Christianisation of Europe; it focuses on Western art and takes the significant works of the cultural canon as central examples.
