Bachelor’s programme Sign Language Interpreting

Content and focus of the degree programme:

This study programme is only available in German.

As a sign language interpreter you will enable non-hearing people to communicate freely, thereby granting them unobstructed access to areas of daily life through translating conversations from the spoken language (German) into Austrian sign language and vice versa. During your practically oriented education you will acquire the skills needed to practise sign language interpreting as a profession. Along with professional expertise in translation this also includes the acquisition of extensive knowledge of linguistic and cultural differences between the language cultures. In the modules Language skills 1-6 you will extend your skills in Austrian sign language in the course of your studies and improve your language level from A1 to B2. As of the fourth semester there will be a focus on immersion and extension through learning specialist gestures used in the main professional fields of application. You will also practise interpreting techniques used in professional practice.
