Contents and focus of the degree programme:

Medical Biology is considered a key scientific discipline to meet global challenges and deal with associated diseases including cancer, allergies, infectious diseases, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic diseases and degenerative processes. Innovative therapy approaches and systematic prevention measures require a detailed understanding of the complex molecular processes underlying these diseases as well as the development and production of efficient and effective drugs. The master´s degree programme in medical biology offers advanced education in the research of molecular and cellular causes of diseases in humans. In addition to the imparting of knowledge in anatomy, histology, medical physiology and molecular biology the degree programme also includes a broad spectrum of modern methods and technologies for analysing disease-relevant processes such as immune system disorders, cancer, allergies and degenerative diseases.

Definition of the field of studies

The master’s programme in medical biology provides future-oriented and high quality education in biomedicine and healthcare at the interface between basic research and translational, clinical and pharmaceutical research.

Exams

The degree programme consists of 12 modules: - Advanced Molecular and Structural Biology - Advanced Cell Biology - Computational Biology in Biomedicine - Anatomy and Histology - Medical Physiology - Science Communication and Soft Skills - Molecular Mechanisms in Cancer - Nanomedicine and Nanobiology - Regenerative Biology and Ageing - Advanced Immunology and Allergology - Research Lab Training – restricted elective module, unrestricted electives, the master’s thesis and the master’s examination. Students are recommended to do a professionally oriented internship in the extent of a four-week full-time employment (corresponding to 6 ECTS credits) within the framework of the unrestricted electives. The internship must be related to the degree programme and it must be approved by the body responsible for study matters before the student starts the internship.
