Master programme Comparative Social Policy and Welfare (JDP) (E) (IP)

Content and focus of the degree programme:

The master’s programme in Comparative Social Policy and Welfare offers students the possibility to study comparative social policy and welfare research at three universities at the same time. The Johannes Kepler University Linz cooperates with the Mykolas Romeris University in Lithuania and the University of Tampere in Finland. By means of e-learning methods and presence periods in intensive programmes it is possible to study at three renowned universities at the same time. Central to the programme are three specialised modules which build on each other and deliver the basics for the research of European welfare models, comparative socio-political analysis and empirical social research. Moreover, students have to study courses in gender studies, poverty and social exclusion and work and employment in the European context. The medium of instruction is English.

Definition of the field of studies

The degree programme in Comparative Social Policy and Welfare deals with comparative empirical research and the analysis of socio-political systems and welfare theories on an international, European and regional level.

Exams

The master’s programme in Comparative Social Policy and Welfare consists of compulsory modules, a master’s thesis and internships. The compulsory modules are “Introduction to Master’s Studies“, “European Welfare Regimes and Comparative Social Policy“, “National Systems of Welfare Regimes and Comparative Social Policy (incl. Case Studies)”, “Research Areas of Social Policy: Comparative Analysis”, “Empirical Research Methodology and Methods”, und “Practicum”. Students must do a compulsory internship at an EU institution, an NGO or another organisation dealing with similar topics. A stay abroad during one’s studies is compulsory. At the end of the degree programme students have to write a master’s thesis, which must be supervised both by the home university and by one of the partner universities.
