Content and focus of the degree programme:

The degree programme “art education” imparts both a sound interdisciplinary university education and subject-specific education (training of social skills and self-competence as well as artistic, creative, academic, psychological and educational preparation for the teaching profession). Students will gain the following key skills in the academic area: differentiated perception and expression ability, understanding of artistic and creative work, general knowledge and analytical skills regarding the development of art, methodological skills for the teaching of subject-specific contents, etc. Educational-didactical qualifications are expertise, methodological and analytical skills to be able to act in an appropriate way as teachers, an enhanced analytical understanding of the dynamics of individual and group processes and of the relationships between school, art and society and an understanding for the dealing with pupils. Graduates will be able to work as teachers and to embrace other, non-school-related career options such as cultural mediation or culture management.

Definition of the field of studies

The art education curriculum concentrates on the role of visual and sensual perception, of art and culture in both past and present. The relationship between scientific theories and art, culture and education is of special importance.


The teacher training programme is divided into two stages. The first stage (serves to acquire basic abilities, skills and insights into different aspects of the teaching subject art education) consists of the subjects creative processes, didactics and education, art and cultural studies, media theory and digital media. The second stage serves the consolidation of the artistic and creative abilities and includes the subjects of didactics and education, arts and cultural studies / theory of architecture, digital media, the artistic-academic subject and elective subjects from the field of art education. A teaching practice must be done. A study period abroad and the participation in exchange programmes are recommended. In one of the chosen study subjects a scientific thesis must be written.

Entrance examinations

Students wishing to study this programme must successfully pass an artistic-creative aptitude examination and prove appropriate knowledge of German.
