The dissertation project must be presented within the first year of study. A dissertation exposé must be submitted for this purpose. Once the dissertation project has been approved, the admission process is completed and (within the following semester) the supervisor and doctoral candidate conclude a supervision or dissertation agreement. 142 CP are allocated to the writing of the dissertation. As part of the dissertation agreement, the supervisor, in consultation with the doctoral candidate, determines a curriculum of 32 CP to be completed alongside the work on the dissertation. The curriculum includes coursework from the research field of the dissertation and another area of theology, as well as competencies in the area of “Higher Education, Science Transfer and Research Management”. Once all the prescribed coursework has been completed and the dissertation has been approved, the final examination takes the form of a public presentation and defense of the dissertation (Defensio). The Defensio is worth 6 CP and formally concludes the degree programme.
